Modern art is really controversial. Can you call this toilet covered with logos a piece of art? Are the dots sprinkled on the canvas art? Is a bed covered with pages from the Bible art? If yes, what is modern art? Trying new media? Shocking or puzzling people?

To me art should have a message. It should give us some food for thought in the attempt to make the world a better place. It doesn’t necessarily have to be beautiful or soothing. But it has to impress, to provoke arguments and continuous contemplating on the ideas.

A work of art can only be called art if the artist embedded a peace of his or her soul into it. This work doesn’t have to be skillful. But it has to be meaningful. Scandalous works that don’t bring about any thoughts, besides how outrageous they are, cannot be considered art. The person who believes that bad publicity is better than no publicity is not an artist. The world is getting used to outrageous behavior. Scandalous actions are forgotten within hours. Messages will last.

Van Gogh never sold a picture in his life, wasn’t understood and appreciated. Now his pictures are in the best art galleries in the world. I believe we’ll keep discovering genius artists who’ve made a great contribution into the treasure box of the humanity. Their works will pass the test of time.

I believe this toilet is art. The artist makes me think about consumption. Is it worth paying extra for the brand name? Can be quality measured by the brand name? What are those things made of? How and by whom? Are they good for you? And the main question is: Do we really need all this stuff?

This piece makes me think about how deeply corporations are infiltrating our lives.  The bathroom is the most private place.  More private than the bedroom.  And yet, here all of these brands have advertised themselves in that private space.  It’s upsetting to me, because I already feel like advertisements invade my mind space by being plastered on every possible surface outside my home.  When they find their way inside, it is a disturbing invasion of privacy. With the way the world is going, it seems like a scary possible realty.
